I'm familiar with the original optical illusion. This one... it took me awhile to see it.

I see three images that are exactly the same other than the red, white and blue. Nothing special

The human brain has evolved as a survival mechanism to protect out genes. It attemts to make sense of every thing we sense, from sounds and imags like this one. Being fooled by it is a good sign that we are operating correctly. As has already been said the power of suggestion is at work. The proximity of the outside figures effects the perceived direction of the centre image.
Lawrence Rosenblum is the go to guy for pop science on this kind of stuff. I'm a fan.

It's suggestion and presumption Butch, they are all spinning at the same rate, creating the same shadows at the same time, so the brain thinks they are all spinning the same.

Had to do it!

er.. no Andy. the two outside ones are supposed to look like they are spinning in different directions. The middle one will look like which ever one you last looked at. Which in turn is effected by the coloured lines. As you switch from left to right the middle one changes direction. Cool.

Yes, but regardless, the one on the left and the one in the middle are spinning the same direction. It's suggestion that makes us think it's going the other direction.

Actually, none of them are spinning. They are two dimensional and any impression of them being three dimensional and 'spinning' is an illusion.

Reality is all illusion. Raw data is received in the minds eye through the retina. Specific relativity and a blend of quantum science and synaesthesia would suggest they are not spinning in any sense at all, but taste of tomorrows lunch.
