What's under your dirt?

Up at the sawmill barns, it's nice soil with clay/muck underneath. Down in the meadow it's 4' beautiful topsoil, with endless fine gray gravel. Ten miles to the south, they tried to drive 40' concrete piers for a bridge. Then 80'. Finally, the 130' found something of substance to sit on. The others were basically like breadsticks floating in pudding.
 
Under my dirt is mud. We sit on a big bowl of Jell-o. Earthquakes are fun.
I was just reminded of this. I recently drove my 6x6 thru the water retention basin and posted a vid. Got mud on the tires. Hasn't rained here appreciably in a year or two.
