Milkweed was what I thought of. I tried to plant some a couple weeks ago, but the plants died. The roots are pretty beefy, and with our lack of rain, and rock hard ground, I had trouble extracting them. The roots were ruined, and they didn't take.
Western Spiderwort. This flower changes the color of its stamen in response to ionizing radiation. Thus it can be used for bioassay for said radiation.
