What’s this from?

These look like insect holes as the stem was hollowed out. In an healthy American beech in Maryland. Any ideas what made them?

That's what I thought it looked like, but that branch is only ¼", and it was hollow. What kind of critter gets in a ¼" branch? Maybe just bad luck damage and ants got in?
 
From the size of the bottle neck, the twig looks more like near 1" diameter. Here, we have a big wood boring caterpillar. It has the size of a pinky finger and like to dig in the center of small limbs/tops like this one. Often the limb breaks at this point because that doesn't leave much wood to hold.
