What is a decent price for 1 gal of bar oil these days?

Like Brian said, Tractor Supply....I used to go every fall during their "sale" and buy 30 or so gallons at $6 a gallon. Haven't bought any since last fall, so haven't seen the current pricing.

My little buddy Tom goes in with a local Stihl dealer and gets Stihl branded oil at dealers prices and buys pallet fulls at a time ,By such large orders it's discounted from the supplier ..He's very brand loyal .I am not ..

Another vote for Tractor Supply. They have a winter blend too, costs the same. 12$ I think.

was an old thread started way back about this when prices started increasing (couldn't find it) .... bottom line is at the dealer there's no deals even you buy a whole pallet , tractor supply offers it as a loss leader pretty often and it's definitely a deal .... I've wondered about buying 55 gallon drum with the pump

Canola oil, 1 liter bottle, food grade at the supermarked, bought by a box of 15 (no discount). It was the cheapest in small quantity and used to be around 5$ per gallon. It's at least 25% more now.
I still prefer it for my respiratory system, even if it's less than optimal for the saw.

Bought canola at Walmart a few days ago fir $7.50 a gallon, works fine for us. When canola gels I don't really want to be working anyways, seems to be ok to about 25F

Canola? Warm it up. Normal bar oil? add diesel. So I've heard anyway. I use canola specifically for it's performance in MD winter, which so far, is about 25° like ruel. It's starting to cloud at that point, but you could go colder. How much colder? Dunno, but the engine will warm it as long as it isn't falling out of the bottle in chunks.

Evidently I had thought I had a couple gallon but I can't find it .The good news is Meynards has Poulan branded for $8.99 a gallon. As far as I'm concerned bar oil is bar oil .Cheap is good free is better .--no I'll be damned if I use salad oil for bar oil .Oil comes out of the ground and butter comes from a cow and turkey is not bacon. Thus sayeth Al

I used to load up at Menards in Toledo, Ohio on my way back from the winter tree maintenance in Michigan. Just a few years back it was $5.99/gal, then was about $8/gal, but last winter it wasn’t on sale; close to $12/gal so I passed it up. TSC here was about $9, but haven’t needed any yet this year.

Before finding Tractor Supply, I used to buy Poulan bar oil at Wal Mart. I figured out it was ruining my clothes. I would get oil spots on brand new shirts that wouldn't wash out. I may cut trees for a living but that's no excuse for looking like a sloppy bum when talking with customers. I gave up the Poulan oil.

And Wal Mart also sells Super Tech bar oil in the automotive section, but it's nasty, black used oil that smells like death. NEVER buy that crap!

My friend Rick Hautala, a local logger, uses the crankcase drainings and old hydraulic oil from all his equipment.

He's got barrels of it, and all his work clothes are black and stink to the high heavens.

I asked him, WTF? and he told me, "Jer, if it's good enough for a 16:1 compression engine it's good for bar lube."

Pass on that sh i t ... local ski area was doing same (chairlifts , groomers, and such make tons of it) , it's really bull thinking they were saving a buck imo. Bad for the environment plus bad environment for the chopper , added health hazards

I save all my crankcase oil in 50 gallon drums .My buddy heats a 60 by 100 building with a waste oil burner .That building has two post type automotive hoists and a couple hundred grand worth of Corvettes and Cameros plus a Mustang or two .He does cars,I do chainsaws .I don't however use crankcase oil for bar oil or salad oil either .

From some vids about mechanical failures in cars, it seems that that's what some people do: the oil pan is full of hightly viscous purée or even hardened jelly.

For the record, even if I can grossly exagerate the spacing at time, I put only dedicated mineral oil in my crankcases and gear boxes.
