For me, cheese toast is bread topped with cheese (and not another piece of bread on top)and toasted/broiled in the oven until it melts/browns.

Think of it as an open-faced grilled cheese.

cheese toast is a simple thing hereabouts.
slice of bread, spread a bit of margarine or butter on it, with or without garlic, sprinkle shredded cheese on the bread and stick it under the broiler or in the toaster oven until cheese begins to brown, remove, serve, enjoy.

meat and spuds are strong staples in the traditional dutch cuisine.
