Patio chair repair. They had a mesh seat that I can’t source anywhere and a custom one is way more than I care to spend on one chair. So for the price of one new seat I got four chairs worth of aluminum flat bar.

I'd show pictures of my new welder, but, well, that's not going to work. After 3 months wait, it finally showed up today. It's everthing I wanted, and pretty much none of the things Kyle recommended because he recommended everthing I said I didn't want.

I got some "weldable steel" with red paint on the end from Lowes. I was sanding off the label, and found the gray oxide layer to be quite thick. Is it just an oxide layer, or is it some protective coating that helps improve the weldability?

Basically, should I grind off all the dark gray before trying to weld it?

Just wait until I finish the foot plate. 1” plate backed up with 2”x 3/4” flat bar. Beef, it’s what’s for dinner. Lol

I wonder what the splitter ate before, to get these deep grooves on the base plate and the top of the wedge.

Perhaps it jammed in a nasty round and "someone" whaled away at it with a maul or axe to finish it off .

Yes. My splitter has a couple stand ups on each side of the wedge. The wedge backs up past them and it pulls it out of a stuck nasty. I see one bent recently. No major harm done. It is also a potential pinch spot you have to be careful of.

The old splitter had dual wedges and I’m guessing it got jammed up many many times judging by all the axe strikes like B had eluded to.
