That was pretty good. And laid out nice for a tree-length show. A skidder on flat ground like that could move it all to the landing inside of two hours. Next.

I’ve just never seen that many come down in domino formation- maybe 8 at most. Those dropped forever.

Looked to be banging with a hatchet. Don’t see that everyday.

I am guessing it was the handled mag wedge. A magnesium wedge with a handle, sort of, for driving wedges but can still be used as a wedge.

Yeah, my friend Mike Davis had a mag wedge like that. Kind of looked like a hatchet.

Enough mass to snug a wedged in most trees.

End grain...flat grain would make me nervous.

Once the tree is tilted, the opening becomes angled, increasing the propensity to spit out...all theory for me. I don't usually get trees where jacking would be the way. Hm! Maybe that big codom euc.




@stig I wonder if the thick hinge had let go by the time it stalled in the other trees.

The plates on tree jacks have slightly convex domes on the middle/ inside, fitted into matching concave ' sockets, as I recall ( been 10 years). This adjusts as the backcut opens.


Wedging is an art.

A wooden wedge cut off the end of the log, a la Tucker943 (iirc)... even better. I rarely buck with wedges if I can use that trick (and I always have a wedge or 20 in the truck).

Yea, the truck's where mine usually are, and I end up walking to it almost every time cause I got my bar stuck and forgot to stick a wedge in my pocket :^D

I used to keep 2 mediums in my back pockets, one to bang on the other. Carhart pockets can handle that, but not Arborwear.

In my experience, hammer wedges lack the "impetus" to drive a wedge properly. They'll snug it up fine, but I can usually snug a wedge with a palm strike, if that fails, I kick em. Mostly I have "Bucky" the buck-toothed wedge pounder...
