I like Jake, and I appreciate him posting his mistakes, and there are a few. I'd like to make excuses for him, like "We've all had jobs that look simple and turn out not", but I can't here. He already had a climber in the tree, Kevin Hamm (Game of Trees), removed the limbs he showed to reduce backweight. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, pieced it out.
Whenever I find myself thinking about a jack in a residential tree, I make sure I've exhausted everything else. In my personal, biased, opinion, jacks are for felling timber, not a residential removal.

It wasn’t Kevin Hamm. It was Kevin who he used to work with. The guy with the Lego smiley face shield. The same Kevin who came here to announce Jed’s passing (rip). Kevin Hamm did spend a week on Jacob’s jobs recently though.

I’d have pieced it out too. Not that I’m anybody. Maybe not have gotten the job but only way I’d be comfortable doing it.

@stig Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would have gutted or thinned that hinge in the middle. I set my dogs at my min outside hinge thickness and then swing the bar tip to my gun or a little more so I know the center isn't thick.

That's what I was thinking, but what do I know? Wedge it up good, collapse the jack, and add some material to the bottom. I guess at some point you have to worry about jacking it off the stump. Looked like he had more room before worrying about that though.

Not that it matters but if it had been me, at the point it hung up, I’d have sent some 5/8 or 3/4 through the canopy as high as could safely be set, tossed block around one of the trees just off the lay and tried to roll it out. That would have been a safer option in my opinion, could be wrong. Could have thinned the hinge slightly if no longer jacking it. But you’re right, I’d have been afraid to jack it into oblivion as that could have had disastrous results, especially since you’re crouched there right in the danger zone should that hinge have let go.
In hindsight that probably should have been topped before dropping the stem if there was no more room to gun it left from the cameras perspective.
Not going to criticize as I don’t feel it’s right to fire shots from my account with zero videos up, certainly not ones that didn’t go as planned. I give him kudos for that, as it certainly takes courage to lay it all out there, warts and all.

I think I’d be worried about wooden spacers crushing or squirting out…but I guess that’s what the backup wedges are for.

You always want to back up your jack with wedges and/or shims. Never know when a seal will blow.

Hey, I enjoyed the hell out of Connecticut, what little I saw of it, which was mostly one girls apartment, inside of which the views were absolutely stunning...
I've been to the big canyon a few times. I rode the mules down and back once, and I've hiked Bright Angel Trail twice, many moons ago. About time for me to take the girls up there. Kavebear and the kids haven't been yet.
Another cool spot near Flagstaff is Walnut Canyon, which has a cliff dwelling village in it, and an easy trail down through said village.

I visited there in ‘97 and it captivated me. The stories of their history were amazing.

Yes and no, odd as it sounds. Yes, I've been there, when I was very young. Unfortunately a few TBIs and some drugs later, I don't remember much. I've passed through the area a bunch, but I was always busy, with some important place to be.
Acoma the "town" is home to Sky City casino, which is very popular with truckers... been there countless times...
Fortunately, it's not far away, so talking the wife into a field trip shouldn't be too hard...

End grain...flat grain would make me nervous.
Once the tree is tilted, the opening becomes angled, increasing the propensity to spit out...all theory for me. I don't usually get trees where jacking would be the way. Hm! Maybe that big codom euc.
@stig I wonder if the thick hinge had let go by the time it stalled in the other trees.
