The Official Work Pictures Thread

So I finally off loaded the pictures from my phone, here was my first bolting job...
Mr Bermy drilling the holes, just in case the torque turned me into a windmill.
Drill and drill bit combo worked just fine (after our previous discussions on this subject!)

I tightened and left the cobras I had put in earlier...bit overkill now, all I have is 4 ton rated... but hey, peace of mind

Yeah, probably would be better, would definitely look better, but having installed the cobra before to keep it from failing totally...it's doing ok.
First one, plenty learned for next time.

I've been back a few times in some good wind, watched it all and I'm happy with what I see

If you need a higher rating and can only get the 4ton you can feed one inside the other to make it 8t rated from when I talked with a supplier of cobra. I quite like the cobra system as it is quite easy to install.

Cool.

I'd suggest changing it for steel. That entire tree will lever on that top bolt. I know its steel, and all, but the wind plus leverage is considerable. If it had trunk strength to hold it, it would be a different situation, but I'd still go with steel. I'd stay within the industry standard on that one.

Rigguy had a recall. Wedgegrips are fast and easy.

Great work on the cabling/rods. I have never actually done that myself. I have installed plenty of cobra type systems but never does.

Did a job in a development site on Thursday. Removal of a decent sized Elm, dead birch, Silver Birch and some understory trees.

We had a truck crane onsite to assist and traffic management at the rear as there was tramlines. Live cables for the frame and no way to close down the power during the day. 2 trams every 10 minutes. We ended up just getting the job done and let the traffic management put out the flags each time our cuts coincided with a tram.

Nice weather for it but pretty chilly in the shade. Up top was climbing without gloves, on the ground it was about -7C.

That one gave me the heebie-jeebies all right. The crane driver was a mug. Kept talking to me in Norwegian even though I don’t understand that much. He then kept hovering picks above me when there was no need and seemed to have a hard time following simple instructions like left, right, jib in/out and hook up and down to line the bloody thing up.

It was quite frustrating, you would get the slings set and might need to make a minor adjustment to the hook; and the twat would have walked off somewhere.

Proper PITA it was, but we got it done.

If you go to another country, you can't really blame the citizens for talking in their own language.

Ikke sant!

I understand that Stig.

However, it was discussed at the safety meeting and agreed that we would speak English as everyone spoke it.

The guy was just exhibiting a typical Norwegian attitude of a 'can't be arsed jobsworth'. He showed up 2.5 hours late. Put us under it on the time frame, then basically didn't give a shit about excelling at his job... He was just there to turn up and from his body language he didn't want to be there.

After 3 or 4 times explaining to him that it wasn't safe to keep the lifts over the climber. Then explaining to the guy in charge, who relayed it in Norwegian that it was an unsafe working practice and once the cut was completed and detached move away from the climber.

It was like it was his first week or something, yet he was in his 50's.

He was pretty lucky not to get the full barrage of expletives from my native tongue.

I can't imagine you or many other experienced people on here would have put up with that type of incompetence and simply couldn't give a frig attitude given off by the crane op.

Regardless of the language issue. I try and can get by in Norwegian but when an old chap is rattling on, it isn't that easy to follow.

If English was agreed on, English it is.

Sounds like a crane driving moron.

You are right, I would have lit off on him, too.

I remember back in the day having one or two rather inattentive crane operators but none that consistently put me in danger multiple times. I think my worst one I screamed at the crane operator that I was going to come out of the tree and discuss things personally if he didn't hang up his cell phone and pay attention to the job at hand. But he straightened up after that, and we only had a few picks left anyway.

If I knew then what I know now I'd be a lot more willing to come out of the tree and pack up my gear rather than work with idiots putting my life in danger.

Omg, that reminds me of one of the ops we sometimes use. The good news is he is highly skilled and effective, the bad news is he has a stupid-ass sense of humor and sometimes does that hover thing or gives the line a little jerk to try to get a reaction. It hasn't been enough to discuss beating his ass but its just something you expect when he's the op. Geez just typing this makes me more realize how moronic this is. Next time he does it we'll have to chat.

If i ever was around an operator who walked off bullshitting when we had a load clipped i would shitcan him immediately. The hover thing would have been a fight too. Crane work is dangerous enough as is.
