So if you're good with both styles of grapple buckets, they are both equally effective? And I assume I'm correct about the stump much issue with a root rake bucket- I'm sure they could grapple a huge pile nicely but loading the last little bits by hand would not work with them, eh?

Gravity and the clamp of the grapple. Load up ply, drive over to the truck, dump in truck, pinch ply out of truck with grapple, and drop said ply at the location (truck/trailer) where it will be transported away to the next job.

It works well. I like root grapples because they are a tad more versatile than a construction grapple, visibility mostly and the raking, but a short limb chunks can get stuck in the tines every now and again.
Those pictures win the " Best work picture award" by a long shot.
We finished our "Southern Island ash tree" project.
Damned near finished ourselves, too.
'The forwarder had to leave for another job on Saturday.
I told the owner that we had no chance of finishing by then.
" You'll just have to put in some more hours per day, then!!!"
So we started at 6.30 AM and quit at 6.00 PM.
All week.
We made an estimated 4500 cubic meters of chips!!!!!
Those effing Ash trees were taller laying down that standing up.
Getting into that mess and bucking it while trying to not having it roll on top of you was something else, believe me.
But on the positive side, we came up with something to beat Daniel Murphy's skidsteer.
Using a feller buncher as an arborist tool

Being 62 years old and having leuchemia dosn't go well with a week of 11½ hour days.

After the tree was on the ground, I thought, I have to show this to Jed.
Not because of the level backcut, because with me that is standard.......brag..brag..brag!!
Nope, because when I made the face, I realized that the heartwood was not sound.
So I gutted the hinge in order to be able to leave more of the sound sapwood and still be able to wedge her over.
150 foot tree with buildings and other non forestry crap near by.
Just my take on the never ending: " Wedges versus pullrope" discussion; yep a pullrope and a skidsteer is a fine thing, some wedges and knowing how to fall trees work fine, too
