At the 5 second mark right after he pulls the saw out, I can see the tree and earth "jump"...and at the same time there is a loud thud noise.

That was a bad hang up.
It looks to me like he miss his lay for the fir and hit the redwood, which caused the fir to break / fold back on top of itself. What a mess. The remedy to get it all on the ground was risque to say the very least.
Typical day in the woods. I could be wrong about all that too.
