It's a PITA, and I'm skeptical the overall consumption justifies tossing it sooner. Aside from energy costs to the end user, the raw materials, manufacture, and shipping of a major appliance aren't free. I also don't want any "smart" junk on my appliances. Aside from being spyware disguised as a trivial convenience, they don't get updated, so you have a vulnerability in your network. "Just don't connect the internet..." It's still crap to break, and 10 years in generous. Has an LG fridge ever lasted that long? Reading around, people get about half that. New junk isn't reliable. Leave the house for a week, and come home to a shitstorm cause your ice maker sprung a leak, and the fridge quit fridging. I like the solid reliability of old tech. and if it costs me an extra $20 a year to run it, it's cheap insurance.White goods are so incredibly cheap these days compared to 36 years ago.
Far more energy efficient as well.
So they only last 10 years? So what? Take them to the recycling centre in a decade and get a new one.
