I can report that we had to replace our 36 year old Gibson refrigerator last year, and the appliance salesman told us that we should not expect more than 8 to 10 years out of our new one. It's a Whirlpool. He also said the Whirlpool was at the upper end of the market on life expectancy.
He wasn't trying to convince us to buy it. We went in to buy a specific model of a specific brand, after our due diligence research.
Also interesting...this salesman works for the same appliance dealer we bought the Whirlpool from way back when. The new Whirlpool cost just about the same as the old Gibson, dollar to dollar. Built cheap to keep the costs to purchase down. He apologized for not being able to offer any refrigerator, no matter what the price, that could be expected to last even a third of the years ours old unit had. Blamed it on planned obsolescence by the companies making the products.
