Well, it all comes down to money. More oil means less wear, but oil costs money. It also pollutes to some extent. There's a sweet spot in there somewhere that maximizes value. No idea where that spot is, but it would be interesting to know. If a big manufacturer sponsored a logging crew to try different scenarios with a scientific analysis, it would be extremely useful, and might lead to equipment improvements.
