I always wear earplugs, sometimes double, but those pipes do a good job of directing the harshest sounds away (down into the ground in this case). I think I'm a fan of tuned pipes because of how well they redirect the sound away from the operator even though they amplify the sound too. Obviously the 2511t pipe isn't tuned, it's just a horn.

Yah , expansion chambers do considerably more than direct the sound away from the operator - nice gains can be had if the whole system is operating in concert ... the megaphone (or horn as you refer to it) while not an expansion chamber Most definitely will improve performance in a given rpm range when the dimensions are correct ... they are also ear-blisteringly loud

That is an issue, you can hear a heavily modded saw from miles away (literally)

If you’re around people (clients) habitually, it’ll cause a lot of frowns and they won’t be impressed by how fast your saw cuts.

Some guys use a Husky (or homemade) deflector on the opposite side of stock outlet - if you are cutting where spark arrestors are mandatory this may be the ticket ... I use dual tubes welded into the front cover - with porting and intake work they seem to give a good bang for the buck and give the Saw a nice “throaty” tone without the noise becoming unbearable; though they ARE louder than stock for sure

I can listen to a saw from across the valley and know if it’s stock or not. I can even make an educated guess at the model (Stihl or husky)

Bet you tuners can do that better than me.

Scenes from the recent Master Mind Work Saws get together. An interesting event. Some of the saws include a 123cc modified Mc Culloch, 3120, 880, 660 kit saw, 100cc twin Solo (it has lots of torque), Sachs Wankel, Montgomery Ward pipe saw

It’s quick, but when the expansion chambers come out, my interest wanes.

We’re past the point of usability.

I have met and raced saws against Simon in that video. Lot better operator then I every could to be.

I just sucked at it, trying to cold start and race. To slow of reflexes for the racing stuff.

Had good motors though. Mine was built by Cliff Helsel.

2010 = My first cold start of the year. Lots of rust. Using a unknown square chain with dubbed up corners I pulled out of a box of chains I was given . Didnt want to use my only good chain for practice and take the chance of tearing it up.

Still, wow!

I saw for real a Stihl show at a climbing contest. When came the time for the race chainsaws, the speaker said "cover your ears with your hands it will be loud!". I was like "nah, it couldn't be that terrible, I'm far from the stage so I can take it manly"

Holly shit !!!
Loud isn't even close to qualify the sound. Something between a jet engine and the thunder !!!

Yeppers ! Jean-Simon owns a few world records last I checked ... I bought a pipe from him and it made quite a difference in cut times vs modded can - loud as hell though ... his technique is flawless and he cuts very, very quickly !
