Saw video thread

Thanks Jed , I had Jack Beelar (Hotsaws101) build me 2 saws that I paid dearly for !!! I’m able to equal/exceed his work on the STIHL Pro Saw line-up for considerably LESS expense ! I used to touch base with ol Jack all the time and thought he was a cool dude but that changed when he called me out on one of his videos about stealing his “ intellectual property “ needless to say if one LISTENS to either Saw run you can clearly hear the difference ... Ol Jack wouldn’t divulge anything to me even after I put over $1000 in his pocket but that’s his prerogative right ? Both saws he built are good runners but I’m building my own saws now and I won’t deal with Jack again ... lotsa guys right there with him for 1/2 the cost lol ...eh ?

Wow, Frankie, thanks so much for the response. I'll have to suspend judgement on your comments re Mr. Beelar, even if I confess it struck a nerve a wee bit.

No need to suspend judgement , I’m not on trial here ... if you have something to say then do tell !

I need to make a tuned-exhaust for it and get the carb dialed in but she cuts well ... I like these older pre-epa saws (044,064,066) , might not have the AV of the newer models but they can be made to run very strong !

Buckin sugar(hard) maple (1450 Janka scale) - not balsa wood lol

Sounds like it didn't struggle, looks strong.

I tried doing a 201tc, but once the mtronic tunes the carb, it has more power than a stock .043 chain can deliver, so all the leaning on it just goes into friction

Really dry ash log: 16x17". I was pushing it into the wood as hard as I could without stalling it as I've found Ash cuts fastest at lower rpms.

Nutball , you can always change the angle of the cutter ... faster cutting but more frequent sharpening or if you want to go nuts-0 you can sqr/sqr grind it for faster cutting ... Doing residential work I’ve stuck with the sqr/rnd (ps 63 picco) on the 50cc and under and RS 3/8 .05 sqr/rnd on 59cc and up as I’ve found it to be easier to sharpen in the field than the sqr/sqr (which CAN be done but is more a pita) ... a sqr/sqr on the 241c above wood cut about 10-20% faster but she moves right along with the ps-63 - I use the yellow not green link chain also ... happy chainsawing !

I just missed out on a before and after cut speed comparison since before the mods it didn't need as aggressive of a chain, but with the mods it definitely does. Next time I'll start with a much faster chain on the stock test.

I square file all my saws, top handles included. Wouldn't dream of round filing at this point, unless it's our low-cut stumpin saw. If the gullets are out, I can square file a chain faster than I can round-file it. The round file still rocks though, just fer a quick edge on a flush-cut, skip-tooth stump saw. But if I have a double-bevel file... I'll even square file the stumpin saw. They're expensive though. The triangles=more bang fer yer buck.\\:D/

Jed , me thinks most guys that run sqr/sqr have a silvey or simington grinder and some even own a raker grinder ( sawking I believe has one in his shop ) seldom can someone (maybe 1 man in 10000) hand file sqr/sqr as good or better than a grinding machine imho

Serious skills if it comes that easy, but then there's guys in 3rd world countries free hand milling good quality lumber with a 070 (no milling frame for the saw). It just takes practice. I'd really like to learn to square file.

Just for fun

Yea, I know I don't wrap my thumbs (more often than I thought), but I'm aiming for control, not maximum safety in these tests.

That 395xp is badass. Definitely the fastest cutting and most powerful saw I’ve run. I want one.

Nice meeting you and working with you, Frankie, we’ll have to do it again sometime :)

Took a hinge pic.

Now even faster

Good enough for one cut with the chain pre oiled too. Echos can put out a good bit of oil though. I don't think it would be enough for dry hardwoods like ash and hickory.

... My pleasure Jonny - it was cool working with an experienced tree guy instead of these “jimmy crack-corner and I don’t care “ types that seem to gravitate to this work sometimes ... You were on time, professional, had some gear (loved those pulleys Saw-weet !) and most importantly the knowledge ... I’m glad you liked the 395xp ... definitely more power in there IF a guy wanted it ... seemed like you had a good sweat goin running her Buckin those 22” ash rounds ... I noodled em in half this morning and put a whooping on em with the isocore maul - No where near as quick as the super-split but hey it’s a heckuva workout ! Burned a good lb of lard off for sure:hello1: ... should be more comin down the pike from my end and if you ever need a hand feel free to gimme a jingle ...
