Terri and I just arrived home from San Francisco to reclaim some baggage United Airlines lost. They would not deliver it to my home address because I did not meet the 24 hour deadline to make the claim.

I got it. Took a 12 hour trip to the city and back.

If I didn't go to pick the bag up they would have sent it to Houston, TX for auction.

Of the thousands of bags lost each day throughout the world there is money to be made in the auctions the airlines resort to.

It's a crock of crap.

They lost it and called me up and said I had to drive down to the airport to reclaim it. Otherwise I would lose it.

It was not my fault. but they put the responsibility on me none the less.

Least out of three bags lost in the last 6 years I was able to get this one back. I had some very valuable personal belongings in it.

The airlines suck. Rant over.

I'm sure there are many people out there that feel the same way. Rotten system the airlines have.

They shirk responsibility and make money at it. What a deal.

That's looking at the bright side!

And we made it home amongst three wrecks ahead of us along highway 101.

Quality time.

Thanks to United Airlines.

I've come to believe the behavior of a company is a direct reflection of the person in charge.

UAL has a face:

United Airlines made my journey back from the GTG the other year miserable. Bumped on 2 flights due to over subscription & arrived home 20hours late. I was less than impressed.....

The air lines collectively have became quite shitty about a lot of things .What one does the others do it seems .

It used to be if they misplaced your luggage they'd ship it via Greyhound bus to the closest terminal .No more !

I put my young son on a flight alone to New Zealand, on Air New Zealand, supposedly a good airline. There was a connecting flight after he reached Auckland, and I payed for the service they have that will provide someone meeting him when he disembarks from the first flight and ensures that he gets taken to the domestic terminal to get put on the next flight. Nobody showed, and he had to find his own way. When I heard about it I became quite upset. I went to their airport office in Tokyo and just about tore it apart, pounding on the desk and yelling at them, the whole nine yards just short of resorting to physical violence. I really lost it, to say the least. To make a long story short, after months of communications with some people in the head New Zealand office, including one Miss high up, I could get absolutely no satisfaction, barely an apology or an admission of the risks that were incurred by their poor performance in an important matter. In the end they offered a few bucks off a future ticket. I told them where they could put their offer. In all my life, I have never run into such arrogant sobs, mumbo jumbo from the bastards the whole way. I got in some verbal licks, that was it. I consulted an attorney about it, he said it most likely wouldn't get me anywhere in proving my point.

My understanding/interpretation of their service is that they agree, for a certain price, to transport you AND YOUR LUGGAGE to said destination. To lose some of your luggage along the way and be held blameless is akin to the UPS man pulling up and handing you an empty box from Wherever.com , and saying, "Here'e the box we were hired to bring you....sorry we lost the contents...." They are liable for damage/loss while the package is in their possession. Seems to me that airlines should be held to the same standard. Like everything else though, it's hard to expect good service from a bunch of modern losers who are just biding their time til their ship comes in. Why does NO ONE want to work for their pay any more????

At the airport in Lincoln, Nebraska there was a room plugged full of baggage and then there was more stacked head high outside that room against the walls. and that's a small airport. And of course I lost my baggage there too.

Had I not gone to the airport to get this last bag it would have gone to Houston to be auctioned off to some some company that has a deal with the airlines. I had 5 days to do it. And yesterday was the last.

This lost baggage phenomena has actually turned into a money making proposition for both the airlines and salvage companies. And that is just so wrong.

And people question why I refuse to fly, even for a trip across the country. Unfortunately that limits my travel options to North America but I'll muddle through.

Dried codfish is the answer, Jerry.

I flew home from Norway once on Air France and they screwed up and send my luggage to Paris.
When asked if there was any way to identify it, I told them to go by the smell.
I had bought 20 pds of dried fish for the dogs, and that backpack just stunk to high heaven.

The taxi driver that delivered it to my front door, asked me what the hell was in there, he had to keep all 4 windows wide open, in order to endure the smell:lol:

and this is why i drive, or take a really small carry on with me, thank god for walmarts, you can buy some cheap swimsuits, and clothes kinda like throw aways

I met a guy a couple of years ago who had to give up a nice Leatherman because he didn't have time to go back to his car. Stuff like that is sorry, IMO.

Nah, he was just running behind in a busy airport, and it would have taken an hour to go back to the car (and back), and would have then been at the back of a long line. He deemed it better to give it up than his place in line. I've never flown commercially, and doubt I ever will, simply because I don't care to have to leave all my belongings behind.

Jerry, if you had reported it within 24 hours, would they have brought it to your house? I know when you arrive back home, all you want to do is get off the plane and get out of the airport, but I don't think I would leave the airport without alerting someone that one of my bags was missing. Now a days though, we fly with 2 carry ons each. For us, for the amount of time we can spend away, it works. I used to travel with 2 huge suitcases that had to be checked and John would ask, what the heck do you need all that stuff for. LOL

I accidental bought first class tickets, once. I didn't know it until they directed me to that area, I was all like "the heck is going on here?" It was nice, though. Free drinks and plenty of room!
