At the Pesula road gate along the Ave there's this big redwood leaning on a smaller one, and has it bent over big time. The big tree is not uprooting. Instead its trunk is collapsing, it's all hollowed out and failing. It wont be long before the little one just can't hold it any more.

Then down the road at the Native Daughters grove is another hang up that is getting ready to fall. The first pic is the leaner, the second is the trees it's leaning against, and the third is the hang up itself.

And we need is a good soaking and some wind.

I have several other hang-ups recorded. So when I go back this spring I should at least get one or two after pictures, and call them "Great Tree Wrecks"

That, or the Goodyear blimp!

Years ago, Soderberg or maybe it was Whitestone used a big industrial grade balloon for logging wood in a remote side in Southeast AK. I've often wondered since, about the feasability in some situations in urban work. I was amazed a what the balloon would lift.

We had a ballon logging show running in the Collawash drainage back in the mid 1970's...amazing thing to see. Winds shut it down more often than it yarded, I think.

You kind of get an anxious feeling standing under those trees. Like you're ready to run at the slightest little noise!

He hasn't done that yet, but on one particular hike I asked him what he thought the bears were doing since it was raining, and he told me "looking for hikers".

Ha! That reminds me of the joke:

"The Forest Service has issued a BEAR WARNING in the national forests for this summer. They're urging everyone to protect themselves by wearing bells and carrying pepper spray.

Campers should be alert for signs of fresh bear activity, and they should be able to tell the difference between Black Bear dung and Grizzy Bear dung.

Black Bear dung is rather small and round. Sometimes you can see fruit seeds and/or squirrel fur in it.

Grizzly Bear dung has bells in it, and smells like pepper spray!"

Great pictures! I've been watching a few old locust and a couple hackberry leaners for the past few years. They're on my daily winter 'route', but they're never at the top of the list. Now they really seem insignificant....a couple of bent twigs.
