milling thread

My 362 with the pleated filter stays very clean. I think I've blown it out once in cutting ~7 cord of mostly oak. Ash is just nasty to cut. Really dusty, and it coats everything in a layer of crud that doesn't want to come off. It's a nice wood, but I wouldn't be pleased cutting it all the time. My 661 is still too new. I've milled a few slabs of ash with it. I'll check the filter before I fire it up next time. Hopefully next week.

Greasing the lip helps but the flaw is the plastic cam-lock finger which retains the filter

I'll have to look next time I pull it out. Mine hasn't gotten that dusty, that I can remember anyway. I was surprised at how clean everything was. My echo 2511t OTOH, gets filthy quick. Nothing's gotten past the filter, but it gets dirty fast.

I machined an aluminum adapter to allow the use of an oiled k/n filter (no option for max/flow on these saws ! ) A34B55F6-0C63-4C94-81A9-AE13008ECF07.jpg

Kill 2 birds with one stone with this setup ! Superior filtration and more air ... more air = more torque = :D

Nice mod Frankie. I'll keep that in mind, and may try something similar, but I'd have to pay someone to machine it for me.

Imho the max flow system would be the ticket for the 066 and 088 ... You could also machine up a velocity stack to allow an oiled kn to be fitted ... the max flow has a cover which may prove beneficial if you are working in weather ! Best 59.99 I ever spent - me 461 and 660 have max-flow systems ... I personally would NEVER go back to the stock hd2 system especially if you are bucking a chit-ton of timber ! My 395xp ? Stock system is the cats ass !

Thank you ! The 362 yes , kit available for 661...http://www.maxflowfilters.com/
....

If you keep the chain sharp you can get up to 25tanks of fuel before it’s needs maintenance... if you have a spare filter oiled and ready to go just stop drop and swap ...<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PLS7kePHvgg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

25 tanks is half the use I have on my big red saw!

Interestingly the larger size of the filter, and the shape of the cover where it lets air in could be such that it easily passes a large volume of air at extremely low velocity, so dust isn't really vacuumed in against the pull of gravity and any other momentum forcing it by the intake. Only what is closest to the filter will get sucked on. Then just keep changing an oiled layer on that upgrade filter, and it might never need changing.

The max flo cfm is much higher than the stock STIHL hd2 filter ... as you see in above video there is simply no comparison between the 2 especially if you are milling or cutting a chit-ton of firewood ... eventually the filter needs servicing or if you have a spare oiled and ready to go stop , drop and swap

Nice work Stephen!

Frankie, I'll have to make something like that for my 066 and 088.

B92ABF10-CD05-4947-9750-AB8F1D02F6E9.jpg ... you can also go with a velocity stack k/n system ... that’s me 064 that’s being reassembled ... KS cylinder pre epa - should put a whooping on me 461 built by Hotsaws101

That'll be some beefy handles, Stephen:lol:
Doubles as a fish club

He asked for 4 of them. Went over kill. But he's a good friend and can cut what he wants from the blank if he finds grain he likes in each one. Enough in each blank for at least the handle and fore taper (?)
Something old fashioned like.
He will be making a custom rod for Levi as well.

Very nice Stephen.

Catching up on milling jobs, this one contacted me back in May! Pretty far from Brantford.
19" dia walnut, about 10'.
I'm considering going back to regular chain from milling chain. Milling chain is a nicer finish, I'm after speed now.... I could always gradually sharpen a smaller angle.

I did try a blower at my place for milling. It made a nice saw dust tornado up my face shield. :(

I am prefering to run the aux oiler, seems to keep the chain a bit cooler.

Edit. Looking at the grain in the second pic it looks like a wolf.

Nice looking piece of wood. I've been using rm2 chain @ 10°. Started at the stock 30°, and brought it back as I sharpened. I'm pretty happy with the performance, but I haven't used anything else. I got 200' for $440. I'll take old Stihl green chain over anything Oregon makes any day.
