milling thread

I see. The place that quoted the $3.80 price was for 26 foot timbers. They only saw up to 32', and I don't know what they would charge for those. To find a log that will make a 38' timber like the one in the pic is pretty unusual around here in white oak. Red oak, you could get plenty of them, I think. We have to saw three more of those timbers tomorrow, then we have some 50' pine coming. Might even get a 57' one just to say we maxed out the mill.

What would you do with such a timber?? Surely it cannot support itself and a roof, a ridge beam maybe. Somebody with WAY too much money will buy it so they can boast about it rather than build smart.

Just my drunken ramblings.

impressive timber non-the-less

Also I feel like $2k is a steal for that log, 1 cant imgine finding a log 1ox12 at that length let alone transport and mill it.

Which freakin wackos do that

And 2 20'ers couldn't surfice??

In no way poking fun at you, you are just filling a void in the market

I make ramps for my crane to make me feel cool so who am I to judge

I did a sawmill demo for the land trust yesterday. Had about a dozen neighbors show up. I sawed up an 8"x8" for a frame I'm working on. One guy said my focus on sawing was like a ninja. I guess you can all call me the wood ninja now.:/:

The Lucas showed up yesterday. Rob is learning the set up today

Milled up a bunch of framing lumber today. Building a couple of small utility sheds for the farm. Using up a bunch of old pine logs. It was nice to run my mill. I don't have much time for that lately.

Bid this removal in July, just got the go ahead. Going to be end of December or first of January when we do it. I want to pull a 4"slab out of the middle of it. Buddy of mine is going to wet himself when he finds out I got the job, he wants the wood.

Walnut?

Out of the middle will include the heart check. Cut slabs on either side of the center or figure to trim out the heart check and glue it back together if you need the width from the center. Kind of looks like the heart of that log might possibly veer away from the center from one end to the other. Are you thinking table, Willie?
How to mill I think is best determined after you can see the ends. Looks like a very clean log, good luck with it.

Question for the veteran mill owners. I have the G776 Alaskan MK3 Granberg mill and bar. How important is the oiler on the helper handle end? With it installed I'm pressed to make a 45" cut, I'd like to go 48". Thoughts?
