Mentoring New Climbers

I ran an Asplundh crew for 2-1/2 years. I climbed alongside my crew frequently. I got very bored just watching.

These days it’s easy to break the junior.

Soft hands these daze, gotta make it fun. Attendance awards, pink participation ribbons and gold stars.

I try to focus on what I want instead of what I don't want.

I try to get new climbers to do this.

I don't want to fall.

Vs.

I want to safely and confidently climb and descend from the tree.

Also, focus/ walk them through a process of mentally defining the goal, exploring options, and deciding on a course of action.

Get limb safely and productively on the ground from over the building.

Brainstorm methods for get limb down and plan to reassess in position.

Climb to a good working position and tie in twice, using the lanyard for active positioning only when desired (which ìt commonly is).

Have an emergency descent plan.

Choose cut and chuck, roping down, hanging from 2 slings and a 'biner/ connector to be managed, speed line, etc.

New climbers can easily get tunnel vision, rinse and repeat instead of case-by-case decision making, etc.
