That was always a method I employed. Not exclusively, but often.

For one reason, it helps me notice what minor missteps the student may be making, that are difficult to see from the ground. For another, just standing and watching can get very boring...and makes for a sore neck .

I ran aa Asplundh crew for 2-1/2 years. I climbed alongside my crew frequently. I got very bored just watching.
