Yeah, but at whose expense?

It takes a couple of years minimum to take a complete novice to something approaching a commercial climber, that’s a considerable investment in time and money, especially if that person leaves for whatever reason soon afterwards, believe me I know.

Large firms with procedures in place to move people up the career ladder are probably a better bet.
 
Some small businesses with a limited employee pool will put in more for someone self-training a d needing mentoring, hoping to have a long-term match.
