Yep- we were the job corp freaks. I spent several years there as an instructor. I haven't run into Matt K., but I have seen Russ Holmes, Brody Johnson, Cary Pogalmeyer, Aaron Smith, Roy Combs, Gabe Jasso- and a few others I can't remember the names of...
Gabe Jasso was my Superintendent on Entiat for two years while I was there. Brody and hi brother Ty were on the crew when I was there. Gabe was a cool guy in town and a jerk on fire. He had the "you don't have to like me to work for me" bit down pat. I responded "who would you work harder for someone you liked or someone you thought was being a jerk?" Brody was a good sawyer and tree feller. He had a very cute younger sister who he kept boyfriend-less by threat of pummeling.
lol, Brody is still sort of intimidating, but a really cool cat to hang with and a good guy to have around. We were on some NorCal fires this year, he was out as a felling boss/strike team leader/firing boss/structure protection specialist and I was doing heli-crack. Brody got a job with dept. of defense now in SE Wash.
Gabe has a fire staff job on the Wenatchee now, and is doing real good- getting close to retirement. A lot of the hotshots from that era are either out of fire or on the way out. None of the people I rookied with are in fire anymore. I think that early 90's crowd was just an oddball bunch.
