That's really the first thing I noticed after I started posting on the 'House.
Everybody was respectful(some more than others :D). :thumbupold:
And for sure, it's one of the main things that keeps me around. ;)

With regard to bringing in new members, how many?

Read a post last night where a first time poster said he was invited on by Nick. Well that was effective. What if we invited people? I woke up this morning thinking that The Tree House displays no advertising. Logging supply companies, etc. should have only upside incentives to tell people about TTH, there is no competitive danger. What if we set up a way to invite people to take a look through some ‘strategic partners’? Next thought, ‘Well what if a thousand people join in a week?’ Not likely (at first glance) I know but, that is not the point.

So then what do you want The Tree House to eventually, or always, look like becomes a very real issue. I have gone with the metaphor that Butch has invited me into his house and said welcome, make yourself at home “enjoy the buffet and libations”. That may work a lot better with a few people joining here and there than with a hundred in a week. Also the community would have a lot different feel if there were a high percentage of new people all the time.

Guess I’ll hold my questions at that, it would just help me to know what the end picture looks like (ideally) then I would be happy to do what I can, and speak intelligently in that direction. Oh well, I’ll hazard one more thing - what is the ideal financial picture as well?

I'd be happy with a couple of new members each week. Hell, I'd be happy if all the zero posters would just post.

I like it here, and so far everyone is cool. Ill be sticking around. HH will be here tomorrow and the "Climb rights" will be here before friday. Ill try to get a photo/video.

Hi ch74, don’t think I have welcomed you yet though I have enjoyed your posts, my name is Merle.

I would be interested in your perspective and ideas for “bringing in new members”. I think Butch said he would like to see a couple of new people a week for now. I can’t believe everybody that works with trees and saws isn't searching this site, and I can’t believe we get to do it for free. Later!

Not wanting to render an unhelpful note, but just reading what members have said about "everybody that works with trees and saws", it kind of seems that many should be in jail or bordering upon it. Possibly one reason that they aren't searching this site. :tard:

No, just saying that we need to be realistic about potential members, not everyone involved in tree work is one, quite possibly to their detriment if they are somewhere serious about the work.

I'm happy with the quality over too much quantity...a few new people now and then is nice and that we project an atmosphere that is welcoming and non judgemental that encourages those with a genuine interest to stay and join the chat.

I agree a 101 forum might help novices, rather than their enquiries getting lost in the general climbing forum. ALso when I first joined I was a wee bit intimidated by the experience and knowledge and would have been happier earlier to have an obvious 101 area to post initially, before I found my feet here. Not to say that everyone wasn't the most welcoming and encouraging, but sometimes it takes a while to gather the courage to post in an area where there are obviously those with vastly more experience!

Ty for the welcome Merle N.

Quality over quantity gets my vote. :thumbupold:
From my experience, you can have a discussion about a topic with a(quality)group of people and a lot of great information is shared.
Or, you can have a discussion about a topic with a group of people with just a couple contentious, critical people and little or no good information is shared because there is a continuous belittling, "one up man ship", critical criticism, etc. :(
I understand, people are people, and they're always gonna be around but to repeat the point, quality over quantity. :thumbupold:

Bonner mentioned something over on the Hitch Hiker review thread that made me think.
Any arb supply house that takes good care of their customers and business should want them to be on sites like this. The more you talk with others about what works in the way of tools the more you’re going to want/need. (Just for one thing.)

I’m going to ask my favorite arborist supply if they would drop a tactful invitation from us into each box it we came up with something. If a number of us suggested the same it might start to sound like a real good idea.

Interesting idea. It would encourage people to buy gear that they read others discussing. Seems practical to me.

Their self interest is more sales. Get on TTH and hear how great the Hitch Hiker is and pretty soon you ‘need’ one. Someone is getting better results with X rope and pretty soon you need that rope. Hear that someone climbs with spurs and does not have pain when all you have known for seven years is pain, and hey I’ve got to have new climbers with angled pads.

Plus as a person learns and grows they will expand in all kinds of ways. For some it will be more personnel and more equipment all of which needs to be outfitted. For a good company it is win win.

Things can be done tastefully, it doesn't have to be blatant commercialism. If I were writing the copy, I'd say something about professionals discussing safe work practices along with gear and methods. All around useful information being made available at the treehouse. It's all true, no hype required to get people interested. A slip with the house address could be easily put in the bag with purchases. We already have one seller here that we are connected to by membership, perhaps run it by NGD. I can see a potential conflict of interest if companies are already sponsoring other sites, kind of depends on how you look at it.

I try and post here, I like it a lot. I just don't care much for forum format. It's hard for me to catch up when I miss a couple of days. Several of y'all I knew from Facebook before here. I agree with quality over quantity. We have a tree climbers group on FB and it has 350+ members. But it was better when it had 100. The more that come, the more that try and make a name for themselves off the bat and stir the pot. Very nice place. And If I got on my computer more than once a month. I'd for sure be posting a lot more. And I was told by a friend that I had to check this place out , that these are truly good guys, and to not even waste my time on da buzz.
