@BreakingNews: Japan nuclear plant update: Walls and roof of a building at site destroyed by blast - NHK via Sky News

They are now advising people in the emergency area to cover up and wear masks. Preventive means to avoid radiation exposure. Advising about food intake.... Water possibly exposed taken internally....

Thanks Stephen, I have been watching CNN on and off but its the Piers Morgan show, what a douche.

Well, I would like to watch this unfold but I need to get to bed, I have two 3 hour presentations to give tomorrow. Maybe I will hit the surplus store on the way home and look for a gas mask.

Maybe the GW Bush safety kit might need to get opened, duct tape the windows etc. Isn't it scary how a geological event could have such world changing effects. I think man really is a parasite on this planet, wars and plagues arent enough to keep our population under control anymore. I am going to go kiss my little buddy an extra goodnight and head to bed, I hope for a better world for him.

Goodnight Paul. I can relate to your thoughts. My kids got some extra kisses goodnight tonight as well. I am going to go lie back down and absorb some more Japanese as I lull to sleep from lack of.

They only have some of the evacuation complete within 3km of the 10km zone. There are still elderly and disabled not evacuated in the 3km zone of plant 1.
Not looking promising. The measurements of radiation were prior to the explosion by the time line I am hearing.

I wonder how wise it is having reactors in earthquake prone areas? Man, this is some shit. I'm glad this didn't happen the three years I lived there. That was right in the area we lived, more or less!

mass chaos......this crazy. Mother nature rath unleashed. Sure seems like a lot of earthquakes over the past month

Central Japan, Nagano Prefecture, southwest of the big damage for the most part. Iwata and Miyagi Prefectures suffered the most.

Big scare! As mentioned, an explosion at the number one reactor. I heard one nuclear expert on the radio saying not to listen to what the bastards are saying, their credibility can be determined by the fact of their promises that this sort of thing "can never happen". Take your safety into your own hands, run run run....get as far away as you can, minimum hundreds of kilometers. There is 1000-2000 times the amount of radiation in the reactor as compared to the Hiroshima bomb, and if the meltdown begins, there likely will be no stopping it. That was one person's alarm, hopefully not a depiction of what is coming.

Now on national tv, they have said that the outer wall of the containment bldg has blown and collapsed from a hydrogen buildup, and the inner wall is still intact, so far no radiation leak of major concern. Pressure is being relieved by releasing filtered gas, and they are going to take the unprecedented step of filling the whole reactor containment building with sea water. "Experts" are saying it is the only thing that can be done. The other fail safe preparations in place have not proven reliable. The reactor went off the grid, the auxiliary pumps couldn't work. Temperatures in the core continue to rise unhindered, and if the fuel rods melt and then the floor of the reactor or a breeching explosion, it is deep shit for the country, and probably for some others as well, maybe for a lot of the world.

There were earlier reports that the containment building had been breeched, it was very scary. No doubt there are lessons to be learned from this about nuclear power safety.

Thanks very much for the good wishes, I really appreciate the thoughts. I personally know some people who are terribly suffering now, having lost their homes and places of business. For many, there is absolutely nothing left. Looking at the scenes, I think you have to expect that thousands have died.

My family and I are quite fortunate so far, but seeing all the misery and fear, it occurs to me that with all the planning and hopes, the grand efforts to create a satisfying existence for ourselves with some kind of security, it can all disappear in a flash, and possibly be entirely out of our control. I see a lot of worry in my wife's face, she suddenly looks older to me. I believe that there is some important message of thankfulness in all this for what we have, and even what might be considered a little, like the bare essentials of warmth, water, light, something to eat, and your famiiy and friends safe, is really something to be very grateful for. It can't be taken for granted.

It definitely shines a light on the time and energy we waste on trivial shit every day. I need to be more thankful for what I have as the world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket.

is it worth trying to leave Jay?

the ripple effect of this will be felt around the world. Libya is probably psyched the attention is off them for awhile

When the news came out that the reactor had likely gone into the meltdown phase, the thought occurred to go grab a flight out of here to anywhere. Hell, my wife doesn't even have a current passport now, the logistics are prohibitive. As well, there are some folks that I will really need to give some assistance to after it is possible to travel to the bad areas. Hopefully, things will not get any worse, the nuclear problem will subside. No choice really but to ride it out.

I went to the market on my bike to get some batteries, and saw some folks playing soft tennis at a court with lights, slapping some stupid ball back and forth to each other, a bunch of people doing it. i thought, wtf? Either they are crazy or have found some solution for themselves?
