Central Japan, Nagano Prefecture, southwest of the big damage for the most part. Iwata and Miyagi Prefectures suffered the most.
Big scare! As mentioned, an explosion at the number one reactor. I heard one nuclear expert on the radio saying not to listen to what the bastards are saying, their credibility can be determined by the fact of their promises that this sort of thing "can never happen". Take your safety into your own hands, run run run....get as far away as you can, minimum hundreds of kilometers. There is 1000-2000 times the amount of radiation in the reactor as compared to the Hiroshima bomb, and if the meltdown begins, there likely will be no stopping it. That was one person's alarm, hopefully not a depiction of what is coming.
Now on national tv, they have said that the outer wall of the containment bldg has blown and collapsed from a hydrogen buildup, and the inner wall is still intact, so far no radiation leak of major concern. Pressure is being relieved by releasing filtered gas, and they are going to take the unprecedented step of filling the whole reactor containment building with sea water. "Experts" are saying it is the only thing that can be done. The other fail safe preparations in place have not proven reliable. The reactor went off the grid, the auxiliary pumps couldn't work. Temperatures in the core continue to rise unhindered, and if the fuel rods melt and then the floor of the reactor or a breeching explosion, it is deep shit for the country, and probably for some others as well, maybe for a lot of the world.
There were earlier reports that the containment building had been breeched, it was very scary. No doubt there are lessons to be learned from this about nuclear power safety.
Thanks very much for the good wishes, I really appreciate the thoughts. I personally know some people who are terribly suffering now, having lost their homes and places of business. For many, there is absolutely nothing left. Looking at the scenes, I think you have to expect that thousands have died.
My family and I are quite fortunate so far, but seeing all the misery and fear, it occurs to me that with all the planning and hopes, the grand efforts to create a satisfying existence for ourselves with some kind of security, it can all disappear in a flash, and possibly be entirely out of our control. I see a lot of worry in my wife's face, she suddenly looks older to me. I believe that there is some important message of thankfulness in all this for what we have, and even what might be considered a little, like the bare essentials of warmth, water, light, something to eat, and your famiiy and friends safe, is really something to be very grateful for. It can't be taken for granted.
