Actually I think it is simply tradition, Jerry.
It was developed on the west coast for your large trees and simply never made it over here.
Like .404 chain, which I have only come across once in Denmark.
I have imported some full skip for my 60" bar. Not because the 880 can't pull 60 inches of full comp, but skip seems to clear chips better than full comp on those long bars.
 
It would be interesting to know who first came up with the idea of skip. The chain manufacturers or some logger with his grinder.
 
Jay, the fallers around here were breaking their chains and adding drivers before skip chain came on the market. Oh about 40 years ago or so. Now it is common knowledge.
