Water softeners anybody??

Seems like my 30 year old water softener is having issues. I noticed tonight that it has been running on the back flush mode for at least a couple of hours... Anyways I know nothing about water softeners so got online and am trying to educate myself some. Found this unit, Pelican PC1000 , which they claim filters the water AND softens it with a carbon filter media and never needs to backflush. Dont know if I believe this but cannt find any negative feedback yet.

I will probably just replace the control units on the existing system but was curious if anybody knew anything about the Pelican PC1000 ???

I pay to rent a unit from culligan, but don't know enough about it to help you out.
