I leave a bit of wood on three buttress roots on big stumps, then cut through those roots vertically, finishing by flushing off the unloaded roots. Wedge free, no settling.
IF you're cutting straight, and start out level, its easy enough. If you have any overlap, a couple bangs on a wedge frees it up. If you're going to have to move the stump-cut by hand, wedges give the slippery surface that makes it easier.
If you cut well through a stump, with a long bar, it will want to start to settle, if you put two wedges on opposite sides, 60% of the way through, you can cut out the other side, and the stump-cut drops to the starting side, your bar is not weighed down.
I buy and use all the wedges available at one point or another ... have my opinions about them all. My take on the hard heads is they certainly drive better but the harder plastic tends to spit more.
@Gypo interesting…my exp is a fraction of yours but I think KHs feel nice cuz they don’t vibe, but also absorb some energy and hard heads the opposite. Seem to sink more, more solid thwack.
No firm preference for ones I like. I don't do enough wedging to notice, but two I hate are Husqvarna and the little(5"?) Oregon. The Huskies break. I snapped one in half, and I have another I saved for some reason that isn't too many bangs from breaking also. The Oregon's too soft. It's also barbed, which I don't like, but that's easy enough to fix.
