Set up a broad-band antenna at about 170 ft in a nice 6-7Ft DBH redwood yesterday morning. Sorry for the horrible pics but it was really dark in here and I couldn't get a decent photo with my phone.
I like to do that so I can have someone pull as I scurry up the tree. That's fun to do when there are spectators and they don't know people are pulling you up!
That must be a western/conifer thing. Nobody that climbs oak trees every day will have the saw hanging off a long leash like that. You'd never get through the tree. I was in my 30s before I ever saw a tree climber with their saw on a long leash like that. On the other hand, I could see how it would be easier when dealing with working your way up a big fat conifer while working a big flipline.
I have a long leash like that and I reckon that I struggle in the hardwoods, saw jammed under the limbs and tangled with the ropes. It's annoying, but I prefer that than having the sharp chain just in the reach of the hand (saw hanging at the saddle) or in the way of the legs (short leash). I tried at the beginning though, but only a very few days, before the first cut on my right hand.
Re: the long tether for the saw...mine is about the same. But I have a second biner where the tether biner attaches to my 200T. I use that second biner to snap the saw to a big carabiner on my saddle. When I hang the saw from the tree...when I am working in one area awhile... I use some of that extra tether length to hang the saw from. I often let the tree carry the weight of the saw instead of me. But if I am climbing/moving in the tree I have the saw snapped close to me.
I just like the tether to make sure the saw gets a bit below me in case I let go for some reason. Only problem (as I’ve found out the hard way) is it gives the saw more inertia when it comes back around to beat ya if you take a nasty spar ride.
Did a bunch Put-on-ground-only removal and pruning today and yesterday.
For Burnham, lol...
Funky mutant Doug-firs near two alders. I had room to fell it, and scare the one funky doug-fir and a madrone in the woods
Climbing alder dismantle near the other funky fir
Propane tank, retaining wall, sorta close to the fence spar
Ran up a maple at the end of the day for a friend, swung for another 2 understory maples and dead madrone.
Took about two hours to make a mess that he'll handle with his grapple bucket tractor and kboom with grapples.
Beginning at ground level
Looking up from base
Burned through a tank in my 200t and came down for a small rear handle to finish a couple logs, and fell the the smaller spars.
28" reached through, head high.
Not my finest face cut/ back cut, standing on a bunch of crap, hungry, and sun light was starting to dim, over the distant hills.
So...blowing out some cobwebs...a few pictures from about 10 years ago or more, my original setup, 290, 020 and 026, DRT with blakes hitch...still have the van, the Butterfly harness is long gone along with the 290 (traded for a discount on a 461)...the 020 is still kicking!
Pics in Bermuda, felling casuarinas for line clearance, it was after a hurricane and whatever hadn't blown down they wanted cut down, chop and drop. Was a bit of a hike in though and it was HOT.
Those stumps in the background aren't mine...just in case anyone wondered...landscapers got pulled off the job.
