Risky....that's a cool tree; interesting structure. And had to be a LOT of wood. That will make a big difference in their yard.

Yea his wife came home as I rigged the last of the brush, she was sad even though we are planting a live oak in the fall. And yes plenty of wood!

Some cool pics lately, must be getting into spring.

I did a little mistletoe and hazard dead removal in a lil ol valley oak today.

What's a dogstooth?

I figured he cut downward to make it easier to avoid the siding?? Why do some folks not like it? Fwiw, I usually do a horizontal cut just below the back cut. Thanks.

Dogstooth refers to how the cut looks when it's done, the bit left sticking up looks like...a dog's tooth!

The downward cut is the standard release for a bore-cut forward leaner taught in the UK. Some folks don't like it because they think your saw will get snatched in the fibres when it goes. That does not happen.

I don't like it because it messes with the bottom of my saw log.
It is a safe enough practice.
I use it if I have the backstrap set in a root flare, then it doesn't affect the log, and it makes for a better getaway position than bending over to match your back cut.

Spoken like a true hardwood cutter.

Most of our conventions and practises come from softwood pulp cutting, I guess you'd lose a tiny bit of volume but a low stump is more important. Putting a horizontal cut in higher than back cut risks taking the saw with the tree, and lower is impossible without a spade.

Been busy killing Beeches.

Butch, no we didn't strap that tree up but we had a excellent climber doing the cutting.

I don't think many of us who use the GRCS ever changes to the bollard.
I sure don't.
