Even on good tracks, going through the switches can give you a good jolt sometimes. Sometimes it crosses your mind that high speed trains can at times be going in opposite directions on the same line. There's the signals and every driver carries what seems to be an official pocket watch because they all look alike. In the local trains if I go into the lead car I can see the driver through a glass pane at the front. It's cool to see but watching those endless tracks can put you in a kind of stupor. He raises his hand every time to point at a signal when coming to it, and his pocket watch is set in a little inclined space on the dashboard for that purpose. He'll be looking at his printed schedule on a card sometimes. Those guys live by the clock.
