When off duty, could you go visit any part of the ship, or are there restrictions?

I'm sure it's different now, but you could go just about anywhere. If you wanted to go into workspaces or berthing compartments, it was a good idea to have an escort or a buddy there. I explored all sorts of crazy places. But, never anywhere that was associated with the nuclear aspect. Those places were gated with an armed Marine you had to get by.

It must have been boring duty to have to guard those locations. I imagine that the engines were interesting.

If you haven't seen it, this is a great movie about courage and the wastefulness of war. Interesting on a German WW2 sub as well. They dubbed in English. I liked it better in German with subtitles, but it's still good.
