They were still using horses when my dad was young. There were tractors around but they were expensive.

The thing that people dont think about is that you needed at least 4 horses to farm with. A two horse team had to be unhitched about noon.

Man alive it must have been terribly hard back in the day.

Tractors really do make your life better!

I have farmed with horses when i worked in Schweiz in the 70es.
They used horses on the land that was too steep for tractors.
I've pulled logs out of the woods with them, too.

I like horses, but they sure can't compete with tractors on level ground.

I just thought you'd enjoy that video.

I'd like to buy a small camp axe, something like a hatchet head but with a handle about 3/4 the length of a full sized axe. Know of a place I could look, Jerry? Not too concerned about price...rich man that I am . Only need one, and a good one will last forever, right?

I know I can get pretty much exactly what I want from Grünsfeld, and it would be beautiful. But a truly handmade item from a blacksmith would be cooler.

Not right off hand, B, but not that long ago I did watch a number of youtube vids about making axes and several small blacksmith shops actually specialized in it. Heck if I could remember their names, though.

Back in '02 I was in Minnesota at Jeff Jepson's an old trapper stopped by there and forged an axe from a leaf spring in less than 1 hr. A real work of beauty, it was.

I'll do some google searching, see what turns up. I know traditional blacksmithing is undergoing a real resurgence here in Oregon.

Too, heavy for camping. Great for busting out undercuts in redwood clumps, where a long handle will kick you in the balls.

Stihl has that nice one now... I hesitate to buy one for felling, though it is a favourite among local young guys.. But as a camp axe...... I know, not craftsman what not... But nice with a lifetime warranty.
