It works even better with fresh wood. Especially pine or spruce, that is what they used here.
Beech and Birch too, but it isn't very wet in winter time.
Yeah, I've got a feeling that the pitch probably has something to do with the phenomenon of green wood apparently burning so well, like the green spruce in the link. The guy's only got two cuts too! I've got some dry (cured--if a little rain-soaked) Big Leaf that we can try em out of.
I boasted about the idea to some ex-loggers at work, and they said that that they used to do it all the time with perfectly green Western Red. Works like a champ, I'm told. They also told me to experiment with different bore-cuts at the base in order to alter the burn time and heat of the darn thing! Wasn't planning to wear chaps to the gtg!
