The only trouble i've had with biners were, I beleive, kong steel biners. We had some for rigging that we really liked because they were bomber so we bought some more that looked similar but the gates seemed to be made of pot metal. Broke 2 gates in one day and threw the rest away.

I think the newer kong gate sheaths are plastic aren't they? I liked the old metal ones.

Kong stopped making the carbon steel rescue carabiners with a metal gate. Now they only make them with a plastic gate. Maybe to reduce weight? Regardless, they are not as good now.

When I said in the other tread that I was too paranoid to use aluminum, I was only talking about friction savers.
They do take a beating when being pulled out of trees by someone too lazy to use a throwline to lower them with ( that would be me!)
Aluminum gets dinged up too easily when it lands on concrete or asphalt.
Except for that I'm with the majority here: steel for rigging aluminum for climbing.
With one exception: when fastening the end of a SRT line around a tree, I always use a steel carabiner. That way, if I have a bad day and get it set so it can roll up the treetrunk and put the load on the gate, it'll still hold me.
Paranoia again, probably.

Aluminum for climbing, steel for rigging.

Same here with one exception. I use a steel biner for the end of my lifeline because it throws farther and comes down easier than aluminum.

The rings on my friction savers are steel, now that I think about it.

Even though it was alum, I burned my fingers quite nicely when I took my fig 8 off the line on the recent West Coast climb. 240+ ft of descent will do that I guess.

That's a long haul for an eight.

No kidding. I was wishing I had a rack like Burnham's about 1/2 way down. It was a bizarre experience to find going down (on a fig 8) harder than going up (on the Wraptor).

I use both. Alum for connections, like friction hitch to harness. If rope is running thru it I'll use steel. I also use steel for lanyards for the weight and the banging they get as they are advanced.

Send NickfromWI a PM about it then. I know he gets rings from Rich so he should be able to at least put you in touch with him.
