My neighbor just came over and asked me a question...

If he stacked firewood vertical rather than horizontal will it dry quicker?

Told him the smaller he cut it the better...

I dunno', what do ya'll think?:?

Thanks,

Josh.

I remember reading something somewhere about how to stack firewood vertically in some sort of teepee and it would dry 2-3 times as fast. It was several years ago and I don't deal with firewood so I didn't save it, but maybe you might find it in a Google search. I thought it was quite interesting.

We weave our firewood into stacks. If done properly it sure makes loading a snap. Most of the time you can strap onto one piece in the stack and pick the whole pile up and load it into a waiting truck.

I used to stack vertically to keep the bottom layer from laying directly in the dirt. You start a teepee and build around it, then build a teepee on top of that. After the pile grows, you just through the wood so it lands vertically on the stack. Some pieces slide to the ground, and they provide support for the next layer. I don't know if it aided in drying, buy it was easy to make a nice pile, and only about an inch or two of the bottom sticks had any dirt on them. Easier than it sounds.

Never seen it stacked vertically. I even sell wood and ive never seen it that way. id tell the neighbor to buy a rack that will get the wood off the ground about 6". that will keep off the dirt, reduce the varmits and help the air circulate from the bottom.

I stacked some on pallets 2 years ago and covered it during the summer with black plastic. It would get seriously hot under the plastic. The key was cutting a small hole in the top to vent the moisture off.

You had to cover this hole during rain! A coffee can with holes on the sides worked perfect. 3 months had nicely dryed wood.

why not try to be a little creative, guys!

I theorize that wood will dry faster with end grain pointing against the direction of the prevailing wind.

As I understand it they do a type of vertical stacking in some of the Scadinavian countrys .

I just put the stuff on pallets ,neatly too . I keep it covered in nasty weather and pull the tarp off in late spring after the monsoons are over .

I've cut into old oak cull logs that were left in the woods 25-30 years and the water still ran out . Danged stuff is like a sponge or something
