I've taken a lot of pics in the parks and while going to and from. That new Canon actually takes some pretty decent shots. It's taken a while though to figure out the tweaks with the white balance and get what I want.

Here's a few of the more recent pics I've taken with it.

Terri's brother has been fishing out of Ft. Bragg's Noyo harbor for the last few weeks. King salmon and albacore. I've been spending a lot of time down on the docks and on the boats lately. Lots of good picture to take of the goings on at a harbor, but at the same time it's kind of heart breaking to seen the condition of the fleet. So many fishermen have all but abandoned their boats. Can't afford the upkeep, maintenance an fuel. So many of the boats are weathering away in the elements. Tied up, rusting and rotting.

sad pictures

Good pictures, Jerry.
I really like the last one, it is such a good picture of Terri.
And the coastline looks nice, too!

Beautiful scenery, Jerry. I would say that an 'unpretentious documentary' is your style, the effects clear and true. Matter of fact but very pretty to see. I really like the seacoast composition with the red flowers in the foreground. The one of Terri is fine too.

How is that for a critique?

I'm sticking to all natural with my landscapes and use photoshop only for contrast, brightness and color adjustments,, anymore. Though the artistic bug does eat at me to alter some photos to add drama to certain scenes. None of which was done with these photos.

On the other side of the coin I do have a lot of logging pics I want to work with photoshop to stimulate the imagination. In time it will come.

If or when I do alter a photograph for artistic expression purposes I am always sure to let people know that the photos are not entirely factual.

It could ruin my credibility if I didn't.

Top Notch.. that's our grand kids.

Just curious, Jerry, what is your feeling about sharpness in a landscape/tree photo? You didn't mention additional sharpening with ps. Even some excellent camera bodies can have relatively soft imagery with a good lens, referring to DSLR specifically. My older Nikon D100 is that way, but still a very good camera.

You have a point. If you ever make it to Wisco I would recommend Devils Lake State Park during peak fall color or Door Peninsula State Park as well. Or you can make it to Rock Island State Park and get lost in a thousand acre old growth hardwood forest that has been virtually untouched.

Jay, I found that the sharpness filter in photoshop is not much unlike the combo of brightness/ contrast adjustment feature. The sharpness filter though produces far more noise if you lean too much towards it. Whereas the brightness/contrast can do pretty much the same with less noise. If there is color, hue or tint issues with a photo I will deal with it before making any brightness or contrast adjustments. For me doing it that way seems to solve or make the latter issue less of a problem.

Does that make any sense?

I have found out through a lot of trial and error that the original image dictates what needs to be done more than anything else with the photo shop image adjustment features.

That through digitizing many old negatives and slides. I'm here to tell you that a person can spend hours on a single scanned image to make it reproduce half ass well for any graphics use.

Digital cameras eliminate most of the pain that comes with restoring scans from old negs and slides. But at the same time digital can introduce a few issues of its own.

Not surprisingly all this can lead up to a thread all its own.

Nice set of photos. Cool big blackened trunk in the first one too.

Just which "new Canon" did you happen to get?

It's a 60D, Mario. A lot heavier and cranky than my old Fugi. Which was a darn good camera. I shot over 55,000 pics with it in 2 years. It never let me down.

I just broke 10,000 with the 60D last week end at founders grove. One thing about the Cannon I like is it's low light performance in the woods. In a couple of these images the light was barely enough to read text and the detail still came out in the bark with very little noise. The fugi couldn't match that.

You must have picked a fairly decent lens too.

One extra lens I have is a Tokina 12-24mm, but it's not all that great for understory.

I've been considering getting the Tokina 11-16mm which is an f/2.8. Which is almost becoming legendary for it's glass and quality for the price. Not as a main lens, but for the really wide angle stuff.

A guy from near Silicon Valley who went Doug fir scouting with us, just bought a Canon T3i and got that lens: almost doing handstands about his purchase now.

About your last camera, the line from Star Wars could be borrowed "you have served your master well" - LOL

That Tokina 11-16mm lens is on my to get list. About $700 with shipping from B&H. A dedicated APS C size sensor lens. The one I'm using the most right now is the EF 15-85. Which does a pretty fine job for the most part. But that extra coverage of the Tokina is going to be nice in those tight places.

The old fugi didn't, Jay. But the lens that it did have covered a range from 28 to 475 in 35mm format. And it was sharp on both ends. It was a fine pix fs 100. Got to say one of the best cams I ever had.

The 60D will accept any EF mount lens.
