So some jackass drove thru the cones and ran over one of my newer ropes, just so he could get closer to a spectating neighbor and say "hey"
no appology, he didnt even acknowledge that i was yelling at him in his car, i got him to back up but thats it, i wanted to throw an extension thru his windshield, as he drove on off

so if your 1/2 in safety blue hi vee line was stopped on by a mazda 4 door car, on gravel ( aggregate not round) would you trust it?

i mean stopped on, and sat on before backing off.

Yup, rope is quite resilient. I think the rule of thumb is if two strands are completely severed then cut the rope. I've cut ropes with only one strand severed.

Car tires are not very damaging and the weight is spread out over 4 decent sized contact points, so it's not much more force on the rope than stepping on it with a boot heel.

I agree, not much of a footprint from that, your rope should be good, roll it round like you are rolling some play-dough and it will be good :)

was working a few years ago in Limerick forest, they had a huge forwarder in there cutting red pine, had giant balloon tires, the guy said it had the same impact as a human footprint... crazy shit eh?

Yep, the rope's good for it. If you can't find any damage, keep using it.

Still, people like that piss me off too.

I always said if that happened to me, I would charge the customer for a new rope and then go and get one. I guess the rope must still be good, but why wonder about it because some jack @&& didnt care about your equipment.

P.S. I understand that my solution is most likely not reality and you probably cant charge the customer, but it would be nice.

JER,
you remember my old climber wild eyed john,
yeah ...he used to rant about the core potentially getting damaged,
major peeve of his
i wouldnt think its a lot of weight but the gravel part is what concerned me

the guys buddy he had to say "hey" to , is supposedly a fireman, i was pissed and going off about how his lil buddy couldnt appologize or nothing, and he said something to me about it like it was minor, and i asked him how hed like me to run over his rope before he goes over the bank on a high angle rescue,
he had nothing further to say

thank you all, for your input you know
the thing that got me the most heated is the guy couldnt even acknowledge any of us or the situation he created, lack of accountability or integrity (imo)

the thing that amazed me is how i stared him down several times, and was yelling way loud at him about it, and he was oblivious,

i mean most people would have gotten out of their car and said something back to me, or wanted to hit me, must have been a pill head
or just a lame

I wouldn't lose much sleep over the rope, but being the prick I am... Since the idiot drove through my secure work zone to run it over, I'd make the driver pay for a new one. If he refused, I
'd file a claim against his auto insurance.

No offense Erik, but Id laugh in your face if I ran over your rope and you thought you'd file a claim against my insurance. Im pretty sure my agent would get a good laugh too.

And I'd be laughing my way to the bank with your check. ;)

As the operator of a motor vehicle, the onus is always upon the operator to avoid hitting things. That burden never changes. I have twice made people pay for wrecked cones they ran over. Laughable? Yep... but allowable, nonetheless. Now, had the rope been thrown in front of the car...

If you're worried about dirt or small rocks being imbedded into the rope maybe wash it or just the parts that were run over. Just rinsing it and scrubbing it with a stiff brush would do the trick.

i was worried about damage to the core, sounds like it will be ok i just like to have 100% trust in my gear

i had a 5/8 fail on a big pull, cause a groundie had pulled a truck out of a ditch with it and not told anyone, and didnt use a shackl and porta wrap, just tow hook to hitch with bowlines, so when it failed it created a situation, if i find pics ill post em,
lets say you could see every rivet of the chain and the imprint of the bar and tip

cant do too much..in a grow neighborhood, lots of people in and out,
ill push his buddys buttons when i do his neighbors trees when im down there again

Though core damage can exist without cover damage, I think in a crush situation it would be impossible to damage the core without damaging the cover as well.

If the cover looked good, I'd keep using it.

Love
