I contacted Petzl America and spoke to Matt. He asked if I would send it to him for an inspection and somewhat politely told me that if a helmet is cracked then it has received some sort of impact. After telling him that this is my helmet only worn by me and taken good care of he told me that cracks do not just happen and that there was some sort of impact. Well I guess I will go get my head examined this week because apparently it has seen some sort of impact.
From what I get from him he will inspect it and probably destroy it because it has seen impact. I do not have much faith that anything else will happen. I will report back as this transpires. When is that Protos helmet going to be available?

It does, but I have some faith as I know it did not see any impact. I suppose it only cost me like $8.50/ month to wear so I suppose it was worth it. None-the-less, if it is a factory defect it should be warrantied.

Thanks Nick! Wow they are a little pricier than I expected. Better last more than a couple yrs.

Good point Chris. Honestly though I am not trying to get something for nothing, just want to know what caused the crack in the first place. If it is a flaw, then damn straight I want a new helmet. If not, then WTF caused it?

Not to question you at all, but "impact" covers a lot of ground. I know that once I tossed my helmet into the extended cab section of my truck, then a bit later brought my rather hefty gear pack over and did the same. Helmet ended up underneath, but fortunately the helmet was sitting right-side-up and no harm came...but had it been sitting on it's side it could easily have been squashed some..."impact".

I have dropped my helmet while holding it and it made a very strange thump sound when it impacted the ground.

That's why I say it's easy to blame "impact" and hard to prove it isn't.

A while back I dropped my brand new handsaw about 40' onto grass. I hollered at the groundie to tie it on my rope, but he said it was broken. I didn't believe him and told him to tie it on anyway. Sure enough, the plastic handle was split. I'll never believe that it wasn't somehow damaged already, from the factory.

Yeah I guess impact could be judged numerous ways. As it stands, I have not received a hit while wearing the helmet. I honestly can't figure out where the crack came from. We'll see.

Just that they were going to look at it. Nothing since. I've been wearing my Kask, which is generally too hot. I honestly haven't even thought about that Petzl.

Well, I found my helmet after some searching. Petzl never received it. It turns out the box I sent it in had two addresses on it. My parents called to ask what I wanted them to do with my package. USPS shipped to the wrong address. My fault.
Now I have the helmet back and it has been taken over by my daughter. I guess this wont go much further.
