As I was driving up my narrow cliff hanger driveway yesterday, I tussle with 'Buster Brown' (UPS guy). He was coming down and I was coming up w/chipper.

Any how he left a big brown box on the porch.

Major changes are subtle, but profound.
Top fairlead is 5/8" rod stock.
The side fairleads are heat treated for stress relief and the pins are set in such a way so the loads are sheer loads. Which means that they can take an incredible amount of force. They may distend under loads exceeding the WLL.

-Can't stress enough the requirement to always use a guiding block set above the unit.

Someone here mentioned pulling/winching off the side fairleads.
This is not what the unit is designed for, it is dangerous, and is an improper use of the device.

Please don't do that. Use a block set above the device which will guide the load line into the top of the device.

Also anyone owning a GRCS needs to have the DVD titled 'Safety First'.

This DVD explains how to operate the device, how to maintain the device, and explains advanced uses of the device.
The DVD can be gotten from Gerry Baranek by emailing him or going through his web site:

www.atreestory.com

Or contact your vendor for the GRCS and get it from them.

Because of folks using the side fairleads in winching operations, the side fairleads have now been removed in an effort to stop this improper use.

Both sides now have the upgraded pigtails. The pigtails have been oriented on the base plate to better facilitate rapid slack removal, and to ensure that no matter what position the operator is standing in, the rope will be at an optimum (most favorable) position for working.

I will have more to say, and additional pictures, in about a week after using the device on the job.

I also welcome anyone to cross post to other web forums. Or, to ask me anything about it. I will do my best to answer correctly.

Thanks

frans

Ok, the side "fairleads", what were they for? Afairlead is something to guide line into the drum as far as I know:?

The short fair leads are for winching from the side. The pig tail is for directing the tail of the rope, not winching.

There are short fair leads on the side, which are for pulling from the side.

None of the fairl leads should have much force put against them.

I have video of the Greg pulling a tree over using the side fairleads.:P

I've never done it, but it can be done. I set a block above the GRCS and use it.

Not how I read it

I've used the side fairleads many a time to pull trees over. If there is any significant sideload at all then I will redirect them with a block (learned that the hard way), but I found those side fairleads very useful just like in the video that Carl linked to. If I buy one of the new designs I will miss those side fairleads.

Jeez willie, don't get your knickers bunched :)

Writing things down, as you all know, sometimes does not convey EXACTLY what you mean as things are interpeted differently.

I said 'don't winch OFF the side fairleads.

If the rope is being fed EXACTLY straight INTO the drum. Without ANY side play AT ALL for the ENTIRE OPERATION, then using the fairleads would be fine.

But when does that happen?

The idea with the side and top fairleads, is to not put undue stress on them. But using a block set above the grcs allows the operator to pull from any angle any time any day. And do it safely.

Hope this is clear.

Willie, do you have the latest GRCS video titled: 'Safety First' which goes into this? It is explained by people far smarter than me.

Not bunched, just trying to figure why they were there if not to guide ropes in. So it's ok to side load the winch, with the new frame you will just have to line things up perfectly or redirect with a block. Got it;) I have 2 GRCS vids, but couldn't tell you which ones I have

I use those side leads all the time if they are lined up to pull a spar over.....if not pulley above.
