I'm in the square ground full skip camp on the 361, 044, and 064. On 20, 25, 28 and 32 inch bars. I hand sharpen for most of the time, but if one gets badly rocked or once it gets down to near half tooth length, I'll take it to the saw shop for a true-up. Then back to hand sharpening again.

My local Stihl shop had a Silvey, but sold it years ago. I was surprised they had it. Not surprised they sold it. I can hand file just fine, but anyone who has rocked RSLK knows what an undertaking it is to fix it by hand. Not a lot of people know what it is around here.

Anybody seen this? My 511 may live again.

I’ve seen them, but don’t know anyone who actually has one or has used one. They’re $$$ for what they are, which isn’t a whole lot more than a 45 or 50 degree pillow block. They’re half the cost of an Oregon or Maxx grinder, or were when I looked at them a couple years ago when they came out.

They do look to have it figured out though, there’s a lot of videos on their YouTube account, tutorials etc. I don’t recall their channel name but if you search Square Grinder you should be able to find it. I was interested in buying one just looking at their YouTube vids, but then saw the price on the website. It is American Made so that’s a plus.

Guy started with it on arbsite. I would have done it or made one (chop up an old bar) except my round grinder is a USG. You have to buy different jigs for 2-3 levels of speed vs. durability. I got a dela on a used silvey. Kinda fiddly as they all are. I love square for felling! Square take less hp, skip takes less hp, lightweight longer bar, reach thru easier, faster felling. Dull, swap chains. West coast recipe. Mainly it cleans out faces side cutting better. Can redirect angles of cuts. Faster smoother less fatigue.

I still use mostly round, just have a few square. Haven't made the jump to having enough square chains to have spares. My LW bars get saved for square skip felling cleaner stuff.

I don’t think the price is that bad if you already have a round grinder. The wheel and jig is just shy of $500, still cheaper than a Silvey or similar and more available and cheaper to get into.
