I've worn custom fitted Wesco caulks and Vibrams for a looooog time. I couldn't say for sure how many pair...in 30 years maybe 3 or 4 new pair of each? I get them rebuilt at the factory in Scapoose once or twice before the uppers get too worn. Like Stig says, working in the woods is really hard on the uppers, and so is traversing steep ground.

Whites, if you go to their store, will carve a foot out of wood (or something) that is the exact shape of your foot. Then they build the boot from that. Keep the foot in the factory so you will always get the perfect boot. If your foot changes then they redo it.

That's almost weird and kinky - I love it!

They don't carve a foot for each individual ...they have a wide range of wooden forms that have multiple adjustable segments. They take your measurements, pick out the form that is close to your shape, then turn the threads to move the adjustable bits in or out at the critical points to get the form to match your foot. Then they record the amount of adjustment made to each point on form XWZ and keep that record for your specific custom boot.

Wesco does the same. If you are ever passing through Scapoose, it's worth a stop. I went up there to have my foot measured by their people rather than send in my own measurements.

My only bicker about wescos is the stitching rotting away. I take good enough care of the leather but the stitching on the soles usually gives out on my boots after 18-24 months. The pair I have now is at 19 months and the stitching on the soles is failing. I can halfass fix it and get some more time out of them. Maybe the kevlar would last longer.

Jim, try a seam sealer on the stitching.

Use to be White's would make a custom last to match your foot. It would cost you as much as the first set of boots made off it.
Most folks I know that have worn White's from in the 80's, have switched to Nick's.
I know my last set of White's are not as well built for the money spent.
So for the money I switched to Hoffman.

Do any of these companies offer Gore-Tex? Insulation? A logger boot isn't much good if it leaks, or your foot freezes.

Is this big enough?

Ive never had any problems with Red Wings. The last pair I had lasted over 4 years, climbing everyday.

Wescos are better. :drink:

Maybe. But like I said, Ive had no issues at all with RWs. Durable, comfortable, and good longevity (provided you take care of them), and cheaper. And if ever there is an issue with them, I can have them repaired at one of many RW shops within a 20 mile radius of my home. Can you do that with Wescos?

Ah yes, only to be manipulated by Wesco trained boot wranglers with their state of the art heavy equipment.:D

That place is really something else.
I went up there when my wife and I were travelling the west coast.
I have always had a hard time getting boots that fit me, and the guy eho measured my feet could tell me just what the problem was: too narrow a forefoot, so when I walk on slopes, my feet slide to the downhill side of the boot.
Now I have 2 pair of caulks and a pair of highliners that fit my feet like gloves fit a hand.
Everyday when I put them on, it still gives me a little kick of pleasure.

My wescos, This is the first pair i have had get this bad. Been on my feet 19 months now.
