About four years. Just got to the point where I learned that I was a hack. I am trying to get my boss to turn a new leaf also, but he has been doing tree work a long time, and he is set in his ways.

I wish more people would care...MAYBE someday they will...

Yep. It's funny about trees..... Some of my farmer neighbors grow these exquisite Chrysanthemum arrangements for the annual competition, but they way they have hacked their trees is pitiful. It's not like there aren't some good examples around. Go figure.

I wasen't a total hack. Just used spurs on trims. I've always made proper cuts and practicest good pruning. Always tried to do the right thing, but I never knew how to climb without spurs. Now I do.

me and you both man, me and you both ;)

I was a spur climber for 10 years before I was ever required to climb without them. And Davey didn't provide any help in teaching me how, either. They just said "Don't wear your spurs, get up the tree." I didn't have so much as a throwball, just a rope and saddle. That was a frustrating learning curve.

That sounds just about right. I am glad that I got good at CLIMBING on my spurs before I started to go SRT. It made the trasfer much easier.

Kevin, is your Robot set up so that you weight the Kleimheist on your foot loop, allowing the Robot to be installed above your hitch, ready for descent, but allowing the rope to advance, "tended" by your hand?

in the video the robot is not set up for instalation while still weighting the line. I Kind of put it on the footlock strap for some sort of backup. not all that practical really, just some place to put it. This set up requires one to reach a limb to stand on before descent or directly clipping in to the prussic (or ascender) with my lanyard or another tether. Then the robot would get clipped in and i could proceed to work. The robot seems so outdated to me now that I found the rope wrench. This method of frogwalking is still valid but there is no need for a changeover.

Thanks for clarifying.

I've used a GriGri for SRT for as long as I've been climbing SRT. It hasn't been ideal, but has worked well enough. I've always valued having the ability to descend at any moment. Probably part of it was seeing about a bazillion bees come out off a tree sounding quite agitated. They were Loud from 70 feet away when flying around the tree in a humongous swarm.

I hope that the RW proves to be the answer to the couple of problems with SRT.

that is one of the nice things about a hitch in general. even without a friction device above the hitch, if a swarm of bees came at you you could descend using your feet as a friction device. not ideal but it will get you to the ground.

When you guys work the tree SRT, thats where one TIP will suffice for the whole tree right? (I am an SRT novice)

I climbed a ficus tree yesterday, further horizontally than vertically, like 15-20' up and 60' across, tossing and changing TIPs along the way...a short climb line would have been ideal, SRT not applicable unless anyone cares to enlighten me?

Sounds more like a candidate for ALT or a short climb line and flip line/positioning lanyard.
No real need for more than enough line to rap out with in case of an emergency.

Horizontal climbing, or wide spreading trees is perfect for SRT climbing, Just pass the line or your self through the next crotch and keep on going. no need to stop and pull rope out and reset climbing system. No pausing or slowing the momentum just keep on going. That scenario is where SRT really shines.

I guess I'd have to be there/do it to see it. I can limb walk DBRT no problemo; even better cuz I have twice the rope to grip.

Yes Butch I think you are right. I had to climb with it few times to get use to it. I have to read and do it since there is no one too close to me to rec climb with. I wish I coud have gone to the tree expo to see Tom Dunlap's SRT class, and meet everyone. I need to stop missing out on stuff!!!!!!

Forgive my ignorance...

But isn't one end of the SRT secured at the base of the tree...so you'd be hauling the rest of the rope with you...then how would you reset a high tie in, in another section of the tree...

Oh fudge, maybe I just need to see someone do it!
I've gone straight up on SRT rec climbing, just not seen anyone work a whole tree on it.
