Alright,

I ascended 4 trees today double rope with a unicender. It is taking way too much gas to get to the TIP. I am using too much arm muscle and need to be more efficient.

I believe I have the gear to assemble a rope walking system (minus the pantin) but want you all to help me clarify.

Gear I have: unicender, dualasecnder, nylon webbing

Gear I need:
pantin-Right Foot
Bungee cord to go around my neck from top of unicender to my neck???
Seems the bugee they use on the tree motion works well. Where do you get this type of cord?

Will this setup work?

I am trying to avoid buying more than the pantin.

Thanks,

Eric

Prussic loop and biner? Imma guessing you've heard of footlocking? Pretty cheap and effective...sit into the prussic when tired. But...have you seen...

Yes I have seen Bernaek's Ropewalker video.

I was thinking more something like this:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/70PXRzmBE0o?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/70PXRzmBE0o?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

SRT would be more efficient for you. I use a similar set up to that vid, only using VT instead of a uni. A chest roller is what I am lacking now. And instead of the foot loop, another ascender on a bungee and ankle strap opposite of the Pantin (Very similar to Gerry's set up only for SRT not Ddrt). I would also add a double handled ascender as I only have a single currently.

Why? Thats an SRT system, you said you were climbing DdRT, right? Wicked that you gots the Uni though. Lots of tricks to try with it.

Any old bungee cord will work, local hardware store. I picked up a shitpile from the dollar store the other day...15 bucks. They'll come in handy some day I swears, or I'll trap myself up a tree and you'll get a phone call to come get me.

So are you planning to go SRT full time? Or just on ascents?

Just onascents for now. At least if I have a groundie to support. Altought I could always SRT to TIP and set a friction saver to double rope and then ditch the Single rope unless it was not getting in the way.

Thanks fo da responses.

Eric

Eric

I just SRT to my TIP and set my R2R FS whilst tied in with flip line and use the same line for the Ddrt. No need for 2 lines unless you are using a low stretch static line that would not serve you well in the double configuration.

I though a second line (in the tree) was mandatory in BC now.

I didn't reload my SRT set-up when I cleaned up my 'puter, sorry no help here!

I'm not sure thats the case Brent. If it were mandatory to have 2 lines in a tree then it would be mandatory to have more than a flipline and spurs, which is all that is required by my employer and his middle name is safety :/:. It depends on which of the pantheon of safety official one speaks with.

I had heard that after that guy bled out in Delta they implemented the second line!

I heard your bosses name was PPE! Hmmm I guess I heard wrong!:)

When I first discovered the Pantin, I ended up using a very simple system for entering a tree via SRT. I used the Pantin, a handled ascender with a loop runner substituted for a prussic cord so I could attach it to my saddle, and my VT friction hitch riding at my saddle as my backup. It wasn't the easiest, but it was simple and it worked without incorporating a ton of gear. I don't like carrying around an entire hardware store on my saddle, and with this system the only extra item I had to carry was the handled ascender. It was fast enough that the guys I climbed for finally quit bitching at me to just slap on the gaffs and get up the tree.

I've rarely had the luxury of working for real arborists who actually care about the trees we trim so my system had to be fast and simple. I used the Big Shot to set my rope, then tied a running bowline to choke it off. Once I got up in the tree and lanyarded in I could untie the rope and reset my tie in point without having to untie my friction hitch (you don't want to untie/retie a VT hitch in the tree because you could easily drop your slack tender pulley). Handled ascender was clipped to the back of my saddle and the Pantin stayed on my foot all day.

yeah mon

I do that all the time when I climb with Lou....;) I'll climb my 7/16th's 16 strand natural crotch to get up there, then install my R2R FS, then i install hers and her rope
I'm always saying this mantra in my head " you are NOT going to drop the pulley man, you won't drop the pulley" :P:O:O

yeah boss, but at 60 bucks each, you don't wanna drop the first one ;0

I got way into the SRT thing a while back....now I've gone back to footlocking for the past year. I also ditched the 60$ hitchclimber because I can get the same effect with one 'biner and a petzl fixe pulley...jus sayin.
