That housing uses special mechanical seals for harsh environments. The o ring and seal sits in tapered recesses opposing each other. The faces are finely polished. The housing is flooded with oil and lubes the faces. Everything must be machined to put the right amount of pressure on the seals. It was a CSI reverse engineering it from destroyed. The oil fill tube got broken off and it got full of slurry and ate itself.

The water head pressure is not affected by total volume of water, only by the height. The total amount of water does not factor into the calculation of water head pressure, nor does the duct diameter. The only factors that matter are the height and depth of the ducts.

 
Static vs Dynamic head pressure. Now you’re getting into mathematical formulas I forgot 45ish years ago. I do remember dynamic head depends on the kinetic energy produced by the volume of flow and a dozen other variables I never had use for outside of the classroom.

I know someone who git all the kids in school to time their toilet flushes in the entire school. He calculated the distance of the water main to be about five miles. When all the toilets shut off at the same time, that five mile column had nowhere to go. Blown water main outside the school. 60 something years ago. Today there would be a standpipe to take the increased pressure.
