Good idea. That should tell you something, one way or the other. Diesel exhaust does not get near as hot as gas does. Less unburned fuel getting away I think.
Just be ready for a mess if the exhaust bolt/studs break.....right Chris?
Those aren't too bad usually. Once that thing is off it is wise to take a grinder and face off the manifold so the new gasket will seal. Often times the old gasket combined with carbon become "one" with the manifold. I have seen people just slap gaskets on and still have a leak.
You can usually tell if you are through the old gasket because the grinder will make sparks, no sparks=carbon/gasket.
I've been warned that this may be the case. We're spraying all nearby bolts with liquid wrench daily so it gets to soak for a WEEK prior to working on it. Fingers crossed.
