I use Q-tips, all the way to the end, but with care 
Knowing that the membrane isn't perpendicular to the conduit but makes an angle (faces a bit toward the front and down, instead of straight to the side) helps to follow the progress.
Firsty, I introduce the tip progressively making a serie of half circles following the top of the conduit, deeper and deeper, like sweeping the upper part of a tunnel. That pushes the debris more to the bottom than to the end. When the sound changes at the top, the Q-tip touches the membrane, then just follow carefuly the perimeter, keeping in count the said angle (to give a better (?) idea, the deepest part is toward the teeth). Then, I go out, dragging the thing on the bottom to collect the rubbles.

Just be aware when twisting a q-tip in your ear, that the cotton can loosen some times making a wad on the side of the stick that could press into the eardrum.
