I love shopping at Goodwill. I was there yesterday and one of the workers came over and said she was just thinking about me. They got in a life sized stuffed (hopefully fake) feathered Raven and knew I would have liked it. It was gone by then though.

Today I got a cool Barigo thermometer/barometer/hygrometer for a buck, this isn't my picture but it's in just as good of condition....like new:

Looks interesting, Che. The best Goodwill score I can remember, is when a friend of mine found two beautiful large Asian wool rugs, a beautiful color, thick pile, and in perfect condition. What a score!

I've heard of some very rare bicycles being found too.

A barigo? That's cool, or hot or humid or whatever..

74*F, with 40% humidity, and the barometer is falling. :D

I find lots of cool stuff. But as a packrat, I have to be careful. I've found its best (necessary) to walk around with my 'finds' for a bit before purchasing them. Usually I put almost everything back except special items like this.

I think I posted about it last year, I found an almost new 'wood stove vacuum'....for a couple bucks, might have paid as much as $10 (?), I'd been looking for an all metal shop vac anyway and knew how expensive they are.

I'm in the process of collecting vintage Revere ware pots/pans....the patented type with a thick layer of copper on the bottom. I can find them for a couple bucks a piece, covers are usually 50 cents. I'll give them to my kids when/if they leave home.

I don't have any killer deal stories but Goodwill is where I get rope bags, usually for a buck.

We just got three like new cushions that happened match a sofa that a family member sent our way. Perfect for Katy as she loves pillows and will need them as she relaxes with the baby soon :D 3 bucks for all three. Back east I used to score over coats big time too. 25.00 per and they were worth hella more. Most like new. What did not fit me I would sell to Boston 2nd hand clothing shops for 50.00 per all day ;) And Salem shops also payed good bucks :D

I bought my treadmill at Goodwill, $40 like new.

I just found some good deals at Target, too! Brand new women's leather jackets for $8.74 and women's suit jackets for $4.74! Christmas gifts, ya know. ;)

My daughter works part time in a thrift store, and when she calls, I haul a$$ down there.

with her discount, its a dollar store.:D:D

You can make some real good deals at these thrift stores .Goodwill is one of them .Heaven only knows I have donated a bunch to them ,just garage sale stuff that nobody wants .On the other hand all that stuff [rather part of it ;) ],ends up for sale ,cheap .

I've ended up giving back a bunch of what I buy there.....before I got better at being a bit more discriminating. But it's all good.....I simply log the expense as a deduction. It's a good cause.

Last year's special deals were flannel lined LLBean jeans and Kackies (sp?) THIS year's is down vests....EVERYBODY has one here now, whether they wanted one or not. :D

I think you got a great deal on a great widget... I have widget envy now Che.:)

I understand. I will admit it. I bought it before I even knew what it was....it is just so totally cool looking! (I had to use a magnifying glass to see the brand name)

I do the same here too Che.. clean the house out (well Katy does it mostly) and we give it to the goodwill. Then shop the good will....
You see the pattern emerging ....:/::lol:

I can tell you straight up... I would have snatched that thang up like NOW. That is a really really cool widget. I would hate to think of what it cost new :O

I have furnished a lot of my house from GW - and in the past was in the business of selling collectiable. My best was a punch bowl from the 1950 - purchase price $40 - bowl pedastal and 16 cups - SOLD at the antique store for $410. I have also picked up Beatrix potter critters for 50 cents and resold for $25 - $40. i am out of the business now and still visit for Books and a few other things. Why purchase Jeans/pant $30 when they are $4.59 at GW.

They closed the one in Niagara Falls :(. Salvation Army is waay more expensive. I got a couple nice suits at the GW before they closed.

Found another. They wanted $40 for them yesterday!!!!! I ended up paying $20 for the set early this morning. I'm not sure I got a good deal or not....but I couldn't pass them up. I think they're petrified wood. Longest edge (at the cut) is about 5 inches, they're about 2.5 inches thick. Merry Christmas to ME! :D

I buy all my work pants from Savers, which is like a Goodwill. I recently got 8 in excellent condition for $35 and a new Banana Republic leather belt for $4.

Whats goodwill? It sounds like what we'd call a charity shop.

Jamie

Probably the same, Jamie. Goodwill and Salvation Army are the main names that I know of, but there are alot of newer organizations popping up.

The profits go to those less fortunate. And if you donate items, you can get a portion of your year end taxes reduced.

I live near a small town, Walmart has driven out all smaller businesses. Not much variety or quality in what's available. Seems that the items donated are often 'upper end', from those who can definitely afford to be charitable so you can pick up good quality things for much less than you'd pay for the crap you can buy new.
